Trades Reference

Our Mission

"One place for the trade knowledge that actually matters."

That's not a slogan. It's the reason this site exists.

Who we are

Built by someone who does the work

Trades Reference is owned and operated by a working plumbing technician — not a company, and not a crowdsourced project. It's one person who actually does plumbing work, building something for people like him.

It started from a simple frustration: reliable reference material for the trades is scattered across old forum threads, half-scanned manuals, and whatever the guy next to you happens to remember. There wasn't one place built specifically to collect it, organize it by trade, and keep it maintained by someone who actually does the work.

That's where this came from. Not an idea for a business. Not something to flip or scale. Just a tool he wanted to exist, so he built it — and he's kept building it out because that's the right call.

What makes us different

Personally Curated

Every page is researched, written, or reviewed by a working tradesperson before it's published — not crowdsourced, not AI-generated, not copy-pasted.

Real Members

Every account verifies its email before activation. No bots, no spam, just real tradespeople building a community.

Field-Tested

The lessons and techniques come from real work, real problems solved on actual job sites — not theory, not guesses.

Honest Content

Not sales scripts disguised as training. Real trade skills alongside customer service and career content — the complete picture.

Our Mission

Real trade knowledge, kept honest.

Trades Reference exists because nobody should have to dig through scattered forum threads, half-scanned manuals, and guesswork to get better at their trade. The goal is simple: one place that collects real, field-tested knowledge and keeps it organized by trade.

That means keeping it current, adding new trades over time, and making sure what's here actually reflects the job — not stale advice copied from somewhere else.

The "Building a Better You" lessons are meant to be used, not just read. Take them word for word if they work for you, or adjust them and make them your own. Either way is the point — they're tools for your trade, not intellectual property to be locked up.

A lot of "professional development" in this industry is just sales scripts dressed up as training — how to squeeze more money out of every call, disguised as soft skills. This isn't that. Real trade-skill lessons are baked in alongside the customer service and career content, not an afterthought.

This isn't built by robots, and it isn't meant to read like it was. It's made by a human who wants to grow and get better at this too — and who wants that same growth for everyone else in the trades. Being proud of the work, and proud of who it's for, is the whole reason this exists.

Where things stand today

This is early. Most trades on this site are still being filled in with real, field-tested content — rather than rushing out shallow, copy-pasted material just to fill space.

That's not an accident or an oversight. It's the actual state of a one-person project with a day job. Quality over speed, always.

If you spot something wrong or missing, the "Suggest a Change" note on any trade page goes straight to the person who runs this site, not a queue of volunteer editors. Your feedback gets heard.

Where this is going

More trades with real, field-tested content. Better tools for finding and organizing it. A community of tradespeople who are actually trying to get better.

The plan is straightforward, and it's not going to change because of growth targets or outside investors. It's going to stay honest, and it's going to stay focused on what tradespeople actually need.
